Crime beat - Fraud

It was, the judge said, "a massive, colossal fraud."

For that, Mark Allan Eizenga, former head of the Saxton Group, was sentenced to eight years in prison yesterday for bilking 799 investors of more than $40 million. ....

He told investors he complied with securities laws, his salespeople didn't need to be registered with the OSC, the 30-per-cent interest was guaranteed, that he purchased security bonds and that he had a deposit certificate of $40 million backed by gold -- all untrue......

She was an elderly pensioner who had $120,000 in savings earmarked for retirement and her children's inheritance.

Before she died, she put her trust in the Saxton Group investments, believing they would care for her money and pay out generous interest.

Instead, she lost it all.

"I thank God that shortly after this investment my mother developed Alzheimer's (which) did not allow her to know what became of her life savings," the woman's daughter wrote in one of 200 victim impact statements filed to the court in the sentencing of former Saxton director Mark Allan Eizenga. ..........

Crime beat- early morning take down including one of their own

"They came under cover of darkness, with a mission to bring criminal activity to light. But now it appears the early morning drug raids that GTA residents woke up to Thursday morning were a lot more widespread than anyone realized. It involves a large number of suspects stretching from B.C. to Ontario and into Michigan, an alleged criminal marijuana distribution network, a foiled kidnapping attempt and even the arrest of a Toronto officer."

Crime beat- laundering

"Lawyers are a major concern to police tracing dirty money, said Chris Mathers, a crime and risk consultant who once worked undercover as a money launderer for the Mounties.

"This is like kissing your sister -- it's lip service but it's not very effective," said Mr. Mathers of the proposed rules for lawyers.

"I have not been involved in a money laundering case ever -- ever -- when a lawyer was not involved in some way," he said."

Fewer announcements, more action required. Major organizations have no borders- this was known years ago.

"Police Chief Bill Blair, along with police from Toronto and across the GTA, including the RCMP and OPP, deserve credit for that.

No one raid will stop gun violence. Blair estimates there are up to 25 criminal gangs in Toronto similar to the Driftwood Crips. While it was one of the worst, this job is just starting. The good news is, the strategy seems to be working...."

Reverse Onus

The changes would require those already convicted of a gun crime, who have been arrested for a second time, to prove to a judge that they are not a danger to society.

"Our legislation will reverse the onus so people charged with serious gun crimes will have to demonstrate why they shouldn't stay in custody until they are tried," Harper said

Crime beat- student slain in school

Too bad the Mayor didn't apply his zeal to criminals the way he applies it to new "revenue tools" and the green machine.

It's the mentality out there , not just the guns. There is a lot of desensitization through videos and other venues plus the fact that many feel the gang is their family. What kind of mentality does it take to walk into a school and shoot someone? While we don't know all the facts in this case, there is gang graffiti on just about every Canada Post Box and intersection in the city,it's a major problem , not a minor one, but many still are unwilling to confront it. It's easier to make excuses and pass the buck. While this may have been an isolated case, who provided the gun? A lot of gang members have them at their disposal. They are already restricted and criminals don't obey laws.

If you wanted to see the extent of the problem, you could set up a program similar to the RIDE program at intersections near the clubs about 1-2:oo am and check for weapons.

Crime beat- gangs- pdf

"When I testified before you previously I cited the 2002 National Youth Gang Survey, published by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention of the Department of Justice which then estimated that there were approximately 731,500 gang members and 21,500 gangs were active in the United States in 2002.

That same report for 2004 (published in 2006) indicates that the number of gang members had grown to 760,000 and there were 24,000 gangs; increases of 4% and 12% respectively in a 2 year period. Please remember that this report is three years old and we can only expect that the next will show a comparable or even greater increase.".........

"Police in Canada say organized crime is moving into the production of chemical drugs because the profit margin is even higher than it is with marijuana and cocaine.

And many of the products needed to produce synthetic drugs are legally imported into the country, even though they are being used to make illegal substances."
