"These are people who whipped women in stadiums given to them by the international community to play soccer, who refused to let women learn to read. The Taliban made Afghanistan a failed state and a terrorist haven for Al-Qa'ida so that they could launch the Sept. 11 attack. What's to negotiate?" she asked yesterday in an interview during a visit to Atlantic Canada.
"This is a group of people who are after the wanton destruction of innocent people and have a vision of an Afghanistan - and, indeed, a vision of the world - that is dark and backward looking and medieval, frankly," Rice said.
"As B.C.-based financial planner Fred Kirby puts it, "nothing directly or indirectly related to the mutual fund industry is exempt from the well deserved wrath of Mr. Swensen."
He tackles the conflict of interest between the industry's fiduciary responsibility to clients and the need to make a profit at the expense of those same clients; the backward-looking quantitative data produced by advisory services like Morningstar; and the perverse performance-chasing behaviour of individual investors themselves.
"This is an important book," Kirby says. "Individual investors, members of the financial industry, regulators, investor advocates and public policy decision makers would be well advised to read it."
In addition to suggestions to improve the industry, Swensen also provides "a practical asset class investing manual for ordinary investors," Kirby says."
"The passengers on United 93 did not know for sure what landmark institution the terrorists were going to take out when they stormed the cockpit and triggered their own deaths. No doubt, they would have been proud that their actions saved the first branch of our government. And no doubt they would be horrified that five years later, the lawmakers they saved have ignored their heroism and done nothing to prevent the next catastrophe from reverberating in the worst possible way. Shame on Congress."
"From Bernard Lewis:
“If Churchill had had to face the kind of obstruction and opposition that Bush now faces, Hitler would have won the war.”
And, on the people living under the despotisms of the Middle East:
“Either we free them, or they destroy us.”
"One look at the average Arab regime should alert us to the fact that the problem, dear Achmed, lies not overseas or next door in Tel Aviv, but in the brutal, corrupt despots that we have bred from country to country in the Mideast, across the span of history. That history and its corresponding economic devastation is the main reason I reside on New York City's West Bank - New Jersey - not the one near Jerusalem. On my worst day, I'm happy about that fact. I'd rather be here than there, and experience the freedom and boundless opportunities that were mostly unknown to so many generations of my family in the Mideast."
The Auditor- General also addressed this situation in one of her reports. The crooks already know where the gaps are and have been using them for years.
