Lorrie Goldstein- crime stats.......there are no stats for threats-: threats=no witnesses=no crime or convictions =crime's down

"By doing surveys of crime victims and comparing them to crime reporting, StatsCan itself estimates that only 8% of all sex assaults are reported to police, as are less than half of all robberies (46%), physical assaults (39%), and motor vehicle thefts (49%). Similarly, only an estimated 54% of break-ins are ever reported. StatsCan says one reason is that victims may consider the crime too minor to report, but, tellingly, fails to mention such possibilities as fear, shame, intimidation, distrust of the police and the belief that reporting will do no good.

- Canadians are more likely to be victims of crimes like break-ins and car thefts than Americans. It's only for violent crimes like murder that U.S. crime rates far exceed our own.

- In crimes where there are multiple offences, as StatsCan says, "only the most serious offence in the incident is counted."

- In cases where, say, three people assault one person, that's recorded as one assault, not three.

- The reported crime rate in Canada excludes both Criminal Code traffic violations and certain federal drug offences."
