The RCMP are short over 2000 officers. The government has had 10 years to rectify this but didn't.The demands for the services of the RCMP have increased since 9/11 so they need a lot more officers but the government didn't see fit to provide them with the proper resources.
Out of that $10 billion security package, how many officers were hired above the attrition level? 50? 100? with that $10 billion. Getting tough on crime is just more smoke and mirrors. They had plenty of opportunity in the past to give our National Police Force the proper resources-promises just before an election are just more hollow promises. All they ever do with the RCMP is change their hats- same people doing different jobs to make it sound like there is a whole new initiative-just for public consumption and photo ops. They've been reorganizing and reorganizing some more for years , lots of paper being shuffled about but the bottom line is that most of the major crooks are operating quite freely with about a 2% chance of ever making it to court. That's their idea of being tough on crime.Anybody who remotely thinks they will get tough on crime should read Paul Palango's book- The Last Guardians -where it's the RCMP that have been handcuffed not the crooks.
"Morgan says customs officers have 162 dangerous offenders on file compared to the more than 33,000 listed on the R.C.M.P.’s database and he’d like the Mounties to share that information so criminals can be arrested before they make it into Canada".
"We'll see what happens," said another. "Believe it when we see it."
These announcements have come at regular intervals over 12 years and the only thing that has happened is that honest citizens have been disarmed while the crooks have no trouble getting guns or going through a revolving door justice system. The first duty of a government is to protect it's citizens not BS them.If BS were an Olympic sport, Canada would win the gold medals.
Anybody who believes their malarkey about going to get tough on crime at this stage of the game is certainly going to be disappointed because geting tough on crime is not in their DNA or they would have done it years ago.All that has happened is that they have downloaded the crime on the innocent public by twiddling their fingers for years.
don't have to acknowledge the truth and deal with it.
Blame the USA, blame society, blame victims -blame everybody but themselves for looking the other way for years. How many years have gangs put graffiti on Canada Post mailboxes to stake out their drug territory.- 1year?2 years? 3 years? 4 years? That is only a symptom - a symptom the politicians conveniently ignored. It seems like it's a big surprise to the politicians about the violence but not to cops on the beat. The bandits think the whole justice is one big joke because they are back on the streets in short order, if they are caught-then they can terrorize neighbourhoods again and influence youngsters showing them that crime pays.
Toronto is short 500 officers, the RCMP over 2000 officers. Promising 100 in a year or two means nothing. The politicians also know there is going to be a major brain drain due to experienced officers retiring. So being short of officers plus being short of experience only plays into the hands of the bad guys. The object is to remove the violent from the midst of society to keep the rest safe- not in 2 years or 5 years but today.
The first duty of a government is to protect its citizens , not make excuses for stone killers.
In other words, you take away the playing field: "What it means is fixed officers on site. They get to know who are the legitimate residents and they check out all of the others coming on to the property," he said.
He's done this before. It works. "It's a visible security presence to identify who the predators are," he said. "It's that simple. And you don't need guns and flashing lights -- just well trained and supported people."
