DS: Is there any reason today's attacks occurred on the day G-8 meeting began?
GJ: No, it's not linked in my view. It is more likely that the beginning of the court trial of Abu Hamza that is the reason. A war has been declared on the UK.
DS: Are they concerned about the Palestinian issue and the Israel-Arab conflict, or is it strictly an attempt to impose radical Islam on the world?
GJ: British Jihadis see Hamza as an important figure. They don't care about the world's problems"
"It is pointless, it is counter productive, to deny that we have suffered a defeat today, nor do I want to pretend that this is the last of the attacks that we will suffer, but I know as surely as I know the history of our glorious past that if we face the adversity of this war with the stoutness of heart, the inflexible determination, and the confidence in our institutions and in the future, that have long marked the character of our people then we have nothing to fear from an ideology that is nothing more than death worshiping nihilism, the dieing remnant of 20th century totalitarianism.
All we wait now is a war leader to give the roar and the enemy will tremble before the people of London, the United Kingdom, and the English Speaking Nation. A people who have shown once again that they have, the Heart of a Lion."
But if these terrorists thought they could intimidate the people of a great nation, they picked the wrong people and the wrong nation. For generations, tyrants, fascists, and terrorists have sought to carry out their violent designs upon the British people only to founder upon its unrelenting shores.
Before long, I suspect that those responsible for these acts will encounter British steel. Their kind of steel has an uncommon strength. It does not bend or break.

According to Sills, investigators from Volcker’s team have interviewed some members of the UNCC staff in Geneva. Asked Wednesday whether investigators were looking into the UNCC itself, as part of the U.N.-authorized Oil-for-Food inquiry, a spokesman for the Volcker committee said he could not confirm that. And given the reluctance of the U.N. and Volcker to share documentation and access to U.N. staff, congressional investigators have had their hands full simply trying to cover the core of the massive Oil-for-Food scandal. But someone needs to take a closer look at the UNCC. Especially intriguing is the question of why Saddam himself, who gamed every other aspect of Oil-for-Food to his own advantage, chose to tolerate the U.N. funneling billions in Baghdad oil revenues to claimants petitioning the UNCC in Geneva. What did Saddam know that we didn’t?"
"Amid the carnage today, Home Secretary Charles Clarke is talking about the people who carried out "these terrible criminal acts." That's an understandable reaction — and we shouldn't quibble too much over a choice of words by people who have been stellar allies, who are in the middle of a rescue effort, and who are unsure the bombing has actually stopped. But it is worth repeating that what happened today is not mere crime.
This is war. It can't sensibly be separated from Bali or Mombassa or Istanbul or Madrid or Baghdad or Virginia or lower Manhattan — or any of the other places where the enemy has attacked.
The only security — and an imperfect security it is — is to acknowledge that this is a war and fight it like a one. Prime Minister Blair has been a staunch ally after 9/11, but many in his country, and throughout Europe, have not grasped what we are up against."

ABC News has learned that police in London found two unexploded devices after the morning's four subway and bus bombings that left at least several dozen dead and 700 others injured.
Officials also found remnants of timing devices left behind on the subways, and officials now believe that all the bombs were detonated by timing devices. Earlier today, British investigators believed that the bomb on the bus was the work of a suicide bomber, sources said."

their jobs properly instead of playing financial shell games with their funding. They've had four years to prepare.Pretty good at stringing out the public with what is a clear and present danger. The public have to go about their lives in a normal fashion but the security agencies need proper sustainable funding and still don't have it. Demands for their services have increased after 9/11 without a corresponding increase in manpower.Doing less with less isn't consistent with the government's assurances all is well. The background screening of people getting into the country leaves a lot to be desired, CSIS has said for years there were 50 terrorist groups in the country but the band plays on.
So the question arises- how many officers above the attrition rate have been hired with that $10 billion they say they put into security? That will tell how serious they were about keeping Canadians safe. When it comes to terrorists, only a steely resolve will do.Reorganizing for the umpteenth time, reshuffling papers, writing reports will not keep Canadians safe. Doing is better than talking. We've heard enough hot air to fill a fleet of helium balloons.Taking the terrorists seriously?- fill the manpower gaps for a start and sooner is better than later. We'll get through this but it's long past the time for doing the right thing.

"Really, the honest truth is that we should be running ourselves as though this was the day-to-day threat that we're all facing because it's been so defined by our enemies from bin Laden on down," the former CSIS chief of strategic planning told CTV's Canada AM."
THE LONDON BOMBINGS
After Bali and Madrid, an attack on Britain was simply a matter of time. Nonetheless, the ability to pull it off at this particular time is sobering. I'll have more on this at 3pm Pacific time on The Hugh Hewitt Show and at midnight BST in Friday's Telegraph.
These guys are still at it after about 10 years.
Just received this urgent email from Dr. Abacha.

In view of this I acted very fast to withdraw this money from one of our finance houses before it was closed down. I have deposited the money in a security company with the help of very loyal officials of my late husband. No record is known about this fund by the government
because there is no documentation showing that we received such funds.Due to the current situation in the country and government attitude to my family, I cannot make use of this money within my country, thus I seek your help in transferring this funds out of the sub-African region. Bearing in mind that you may assist me, I have decided to part with 30% of the total sum for your asstance. Your URGENT response is needed. Please kindly respond to me by return mail for details of this transaction.

According to unofficial estimates, at least 45 died in the terrorist bombings of London trains and buses and 150 were seriously injured out of a total of 1000 wounded. Police say all bodies recovered.

Group calling itself the Organization of al Qaeda Jihad in Europe claimed the London bombing in revenge for Britain’s participation in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Italy, Denmark and “all the Crusaders” were threatened with the same punishment unless they withdrew their troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. This claim has not been authenticated.

Al Qaeda strikes London on day of G8 summit opening in Scotland
DEBKAfile’s counter-terror experts confirm that on the morning of Thursday, July 7, London came under a large-scale al Qaeda assault exceeding in scale the March 2004 rail attacks in Madrid. Four coordinated bomb blasts hit metro stations and trains in central London close to the City financial district and wrecked a double-decker bus. The London underground service was shut down and central London bus lines suspended.
Because the trains and buses were crowded, the number of casualties was high - unofficially estimated at 45 dead and at least 1000 injured, taxing London hospitals to the limit. At only one of the tube stations attacked, Aldgate East, 90 casualties were reported.
The bomb blitz was timed for the first day of the G8 summit in Gleneagles, Scotland. Its message: al Qaeda will dictate the world’s agenda – not the leaders of the world’s industrialized nations, especially US president George Bush.
The Islamist terrorist group was also demonstrating to the pundits who had dismissed al Qaeda as a spent force that it was capable of crippling a major world capital in a couple of hours by disabling its transport system.
The attack may not be over. Towns outside London, Coventry, Brighton and Swindon, have closed their railway stations over “security incidents.”
The British Cobra Committee immediately activated emergency, security and intelligence services according to a prepared contingency plan for a major terrorist attack on London. British troops began arriving in the British capital while thousands of commuters were still trapped deep down under ground in dark tunnels The soldiers took up position at Buckingham Palace and other strategic points, including foreign missions which were advised to evacuate. By the afternoon, the police reported all tube stations had been cleared and all bodies recovered. "
With regards to security in Canada, the government has been whistling past the graveyard on security for years. We need to have at least 2500 additional RCMP officers. We need experienced investigators.
The first thing that needs to be done is to make appropriate compensation packages available for top investigators that are planning to retire this year and in the next couple of years. They should also try to rehire hundreds of skilled investigators that have retired in the past few years. Without this expertise , they will simply be running around in circles. The same goes for CSIS who are short at least 700 agents. Hiring 80 novices/year is not good enough or fast enough. The government has been pussyfooting around this issue for far too long. These are not additional personnel, they are to simply bring the levels up to where they were 12 years ago before the downsizing.Closing detachments and every section having personnel shortages are indications of being undermanned despite $10 billion that was supposed to have gone into security.Obviously it didn't go into manpower.
The first duty of a government is to protect its citizens not make excuses. As we know, the government has not been short of funds. As if another reminder is needed, according to the USA- security trumps trade. The London blasts should reinforce what has to be done.
Our sympathy and sorrow go out to the victims and their families of the London bombings.
