The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing -- Edmund Burke
Kudos to Toronto Police, Det. Paul Gillespie and his colleagues , Orange County Police in Florida, assisting law enforcement agencies and DHS for their perseverance. The girl was apparently found safe and the perpetrator is behind bars.
"There are two disturbing things about the current revisionism that transcend the human need to question orthodoxy. The first is the sheer hypocrisy of it all. Whatever mistakes and lapses committed by the Allies, they pale in comparison to the savagery of the Axis or the Communists. Post-facto critics never tell us what they would have done instead — lay off the German cities and send more ground troops into a pristine Third Reich; don’t bomb, but invade, an untouched Japan in 1946; keep out of WWII entirely; or in its aftermath invade the Soviet Union?"
"Somewhere in all this, the U.N.-authorized Volcker inquiry is engaged right now in a legal showdown, demanding that House investigators give back boxfuls of evidence that Rep. Hyde’s Committee on International Relations subpoenaed recently from an investigator who resigned last month from Volcker’s team, claiming Volcker's most recent report had been too soft on U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Sen. Coleman and Rep. Chris Shays, who heads yet another congressional panel investigating Oil-for-Food, have also issued subpoenas for this evidence. A restraining order, obtained by Volcker’s committee, expires next week. There is room to wonder who is most likely to enlighten us as to the true depths of Oil-for-Food’s dirty secrets: Congress, now pouring forth information to the public; or Volcker, already sitting on millions of still-secret U.N. documents, who wants his stray boxes of evidence back."
If Canadians want to know what's going on they can also turn on CPAC or watch CTV Newsnet. Unfortunately CBC can't afford to show the rest of Canada the live feed even though this is the biggest scandal in many years. They take breaks at the Inquiry ,so they can still do newsbreaks if they so desired.
Cash in envelopes? making sure there are no paper trails? Inegrity in the system? no whistle blower legislation?
Atop the Bush template sit the oft-repeated words "democracy and freedom." This is the D&F model. The standard criticism of Bushian D&F is that it is too idealistic. But the Bush speech explicitly admits that point, arguing that "it does not end" with independence and elections. Democracy's promise, he insists, is gained only by equal justice under a rule of law, secure rights for minorities (a 21st century sine qua non), a media that isn't phony, viable political parties, an independent judiciary and limits on executive power.
