Less talk-more action
"How many more shooting deaths will it take before someone -- anyone -- stops talking and does something?
When this city had too much snow, we called in the army. When we had a disease outbreak, we put thousands of people into quarantine. When we had a blackout, we shut down business across the province.
It's time our leaders admitted this is a crisis, too. How many more people have to be sprayed with bullets before they cut the bafflegab and show us some action? "
How many OPP and RCMP officers gave been seconded to assist? How many additional officers has the inelligence unit received? The guns and drugs task force? What about the sentences? The police have to expend additional manpower just to do the same work over and over with the same perpetrators because of the revolving door justice system? How many of the triggermen have had previous weapons offenses but were given a slap on the wrist and told to offend no more?(but they do).How many witnesses would come forward but are afraid because the crooks are back out on the streets in no time or else their buddies will threaten witnesses?
In the meantime they will hold a summit sometime down the road in the hopes the major players will talk to their distribution network to lay low for awhile because "the noise doesn't look good and is bad for business".The federal government has been in power for 12 years and all they could do was pronounce the usual lame "have another summit meeting" as if they are going to reinvent the wheel. There are thousands of reports already available if they had bothered to look and implement the recommendations but this smells more like the usual stalling tactics.Maybe they can throw the reports at the perpetrators.
First you control the streets, then you can talk about diverting people from gangs-get the priorities straight. The drug dealers are heroes to potential recruits-if they were behind bars, they wouldn't be such heroes and they wouldn't be looked up to by the young kids.If the powers that be can't walk and chew gum at the same time (lock up the hoodlums and provide useful diversions for the younger kids),then maybe some people should be changing careers.Action is required, not talk.
Here's a $20 million saving on research and instead of wasting time on a summit.Put the money into manpower and stop the revolving door syndrome. It would help if the media did their homework and knew when the politicians were rehashing the same excuses instead of giving them a free ride. This situation didn't develop overnight. It's just that a lot of buck passing took place. When they say "we take the situation very , very ,very ,very seriously "-it means "nothing to see here folks,we've got everything under control, move along now, don't ask any further pesky questions".-basically mind your own business ,go back to sleep and it'll go on the back burner. It's mind boggling how a government can squander $1.5 billion on a gun registry that goes after honest farmers, duck hunters and target shooters but did nothing to get the real crooks off the streets and left Canadians still vulnerable to stone killers.
Lots of reports here and there's plenty more out there. We don't need more reports, we need action

I must respectfully disagree. This is not mind boggling. The purpose of the gun registry was never to control crime. Its purpose was first to give Alan Rock something bigger to crow about than Kim Campbell's previous (pointless) efforts on guns and second to provide a big pot of money for the Liberals to spread around to friends. You can buy a lot of friends with 1.5 billion bucks.
When understood in this light the behaviour of the government becomes perfectly logical. They don't do things to protect the public, they do things that give them oportunities to steal more money. Letting gang bangers shoot each other increases the sense of emergency, which gets the money flowing, which means more money to stick to the Liberal's sticky fingers. All one has to do is give up the idea that the Liberals care a damn about Canada or Canadians, and the rest becomes stuningly obvious.
The number of shooting deaths required before someone "does something" will be as many as it takes to get the public to vote other than Liberal. That I fear may be a rather large number of caskets.
