The first duty of a government is to protect its citizens
"We're not the public service of Canada ..." he said. "We are the Canadian Forces and our job is to be able to kill people."
If the governmet were truly serious the would have restored the funding they cut from the military. They reduced their funding by $20 billion over the past few years and are only putting back $13 billion over the next 5 years with most of the funding coming in years 4 & 5. If they were serious , they'd be making sure that they have the right and functioning equipment for their mission. Having to resort to renting paintball equipment for practice doesn't sound like they are getting the necessary funding.
If the government were truly serious about protecting Canadians, they would have already made available the funding to hire at least 2200 RCMP "officers" and 700 CSIS agents and 1200 CBSA personnel. That's what they would have to do if they were really serious about protecting Canadians. These would only bring staffing up to the levels of 12 years ago not what they need since 9/11 because of increased demands. These figures are just the minimum and they're not even at the minimum levels. The terrorists and crooks already know where the holes are since they can operate pretty freely in the country. So far it's been all talk and little action when it comes to protecting Canadians.
The ostrich approach isn't going to protect Canadians nor mere press releases. Making promises for 5 years down the road when the danger is immediate makes government announcements on security ring hollow.Didn't know the danger was immediate? They have had CSIS reports since 1998 stating that there were at least 50 terrorist groups in the country. If Canadians would like to know the real situation, they only have to read the Senate reports on national security put out by Sen. Colin Kenny's Committee or read the Auditor- General's reports.
